Where She Begins 5 — Day 249

In Where She Begins 6, I return to the human body to look more closely and give my memory something to hold. A seated woman turns her back towards us. The slope of her shoulders leads into the narrowing waist, then opens into the hips. Dark lines follow these changes, while peach, muted rose, ochre, and cool grey strokes describe the figure in separate passages.

This study is a way of gathering visual elements for future paintings: the turn of a neck, the relationship between shoulder and spine, the weight of a seated pose. By translating these observations into marks, I am building a vocabulary of shapes that I can later recall, transform, and bring into abstraction.
