Watercolor of December 2020
In this article, I discuss my inspirations and that I have not painted a watercolor for around ten years.
Apollo’s sketches were inspired by an actual statue I bought online. Other sketches are based on a photograph found on Pexel’s Website.
I made two watercolors about my daughter based on the same picture.
This is the first watercolor portrait I made of my daughter. I shot the photo very close on the first day of school, and the camera’s objective deformed the face. I involuntary accentuated that fact by not taking a breath from my initial sketch. I didn’t notice that the left eye was not in the right place.
I also failed to reproduce the skin colors and shadows on her face. I added too many layers of contrasting colors here and there. The back doesn’t show any dimensions; it looks flat. I also didn’t take enough time while painting. I should change my brush to a thinner one.
Except for the defects, the colors look nice and work well together.
For the second Watercolor, I created a grid to sketch easier from the photo, and it worked well because the result was more realistic.
I decided to use two colors: a warm red and a cold blue. While working on it, I noticed I had to heighten the overall look with one surprising color. I used a light orange over here and here.
I didn’t paint the lips the first layer of colors and did it later, which wasn’t a good idea. I also mistakenly named the down teeth. It is still not satisfying, but there is a clear improvement from the first one.
