Watercolor of December 2020

I talk a bit about my inspirations in this article and the fact that there are around ten years that I didn’t paint a watercolor.
Here are two watercolors I made about my daughter based on the same picture

Apollo’s sketches were drawn from a real statue I bought online. Other sketches are based on a photograph found on pexels.

The first watercolor portrait of my daughter

On the left is the first watercolor portrait I made of my daughter. I shoot the photo on the first day of her school very close, and the camera’s objective deforms the face. I involuntary accentuated that fact by don’t take a breath from my initial sketch. I simply didn’t notice that the left eye is not in the right place.

I also failed to reproduce the skin colors as well as the shadows on her face. I add too many layers of contrast colors here and here. The back isn’t showing any dimensions, it looks flat. I also didn’t take enough time while painting, I should change my brush for a thinner one.
Except that defects, the colors look nice to me and work well together.

For the second Watercolor, I created a grid to sketch easier from the photo, and it worked well because the result is more realistic.

I decided to use a two colors. A warm red and a cold blue. While working on it, I notice that I had to heighten the overall look with one surprising color. I use a light orange over here and here.

I didn’t paint the lips the first layer of colors and did it later. It wasn’t a good idea. I have also mistaken the color of the down teeth. It is still not satisfying, but from the first one, there is a clear improvement.
